Welcome to South Shore Artists Group

Our Story

The South Shore Artists' Group was born in 1945 when artist Thea Wilbur Olsen and a few friends gathered to paint outdoors in Tottenville's Butler Manor Park, raising funds for Richmond Memorial Hospital. Meeting every Tuesday, weather permitting, they moved indoors when winter arrived and held their first exhibition at the local Chevrolet dealership on Main Street in 1946. The response was overwhelming, and membership grew quickly.

Our Community

Today, SSAG brings together artists from diverse backgrounds—some formally trained, others self-taught—each contributing their unique style and vision. What unites us is a genuine spirit of support and encouragement. We believe that art flourishes in community, and every member plays a vital role in our creative family.

Our Recipe

Staying true to our roots, we still meet every Tuesday to create, share techniques, and learn from one another and visiting guest artists. These gatherings are the heartbeat of our group, fostering artistic growth and lasting friendships.

Our Community Impact

SSAG exhibits throughout Staten Island at beloved venues including Conference House Park, The Art Lab, Staten Island Zoo, St. John's University, and various local libraries and restaurants. Our shows bring art into the community, making creativity accessible to all.

Our Heart

Most importantly, the artists of SSAG are friends—just as those original members were over 75 years ago. That spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect continues to define who we are. Whether you're an experienced artist or just beginning your creative journey, you'll find a welcoming home with us.

Join us on a Tuesday and see where your creativity can take you.
